John Chu is the Chief of Public Affairs at the U.S. Mint. He joined the Mint in November 2016 as Branch Chief for Digital Media, Education Outreach, and Internal Communications in the Public Affairs Office. He later served as Deputy Chief and Acting Chief before becoming the Chief of Public Affairs in February 2024.
John has extensive experience in federal government communications. Prior to the Mint, John served as the Editorial Team Lead at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and as a Senior Public Affairs Specialist with the U.S. Department of Energy. He was a Presidential Management Fellow, and worked at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a Program Analyst, the Food and Drug Administration as a Communications Specialist, and the U.S. Census Bureau as a Marketing Communications Specialist during the two year leadership development program. John also worked on Capitol Hill for former U.S. Representative Ron Kind. He began his career as an intern at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, and is an AmeriCorp alum.
John graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in communications, and from Syracuse University with a master’s of public administration. John also studied public policy and international affairs at Boston University and the University of California, Berkeley. John lives in Rockville, Maryland with his wife and two boys.
