2017 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin

American Eagle Coins

Background

2017 marked the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin. The U.S. Mint produced its first legal tender platinum proof coin in 1997. Its $100 face value was the highest denomination for a U.S. coin. To commemorate this milestone, the 2017 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin returned to the original 1997 design.

The obverse design is the “Portrait of Liberty.” Liberty looks to the future in this modern interpretation of an American icon, the Statue of Liberty, by former U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti. The reverse design, by former U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Thomas D. Rogers, features an eagle soaring above America.
