Background
The Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar (Jefferson) was released in 1903 to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The Exposition was held in St. Louis, Missouri and it celebrated the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. This coin, and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar featuring William McKinley, were the first commemorative gold coins.
