Background
Released in 1994, this coin was authorized to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson.
Recipient Organization: Jefferson Endowment Fund and the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest
Surcharges received in connection with the sale of the first 500,000 coins issued were to be distributed to the Jefferson Endowment Fund, to be used to:- Establish and maintain an endowment to be a permanent source of support for Monticello and its historic furnishings.
- For the Fund's educational programs, including the International Center for Jefferson Studies.

Characteristics
The obverse design of the coin features an image of Thomas Jefferson that was based on the medallion portrait by Gilbert Stuart.
The reverse of the coin features a rendering of a Monticello elevation drawing produced by the Historical American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record of the National Park Service.
