Background

This medal honors David J. Ryder, the 34th and 39th Director of the United States Mint. The Department of the Treasury has a longstanding tradition of striking bronze medals for each Mint Director. These medals serve as historical artifacts that are preserved as a part of this nation’s tradition and heritage. In addition to being sold to collectors, the medals are archived by the Smithsonian Institution. The Mint has produced medals for 29 of the last 38 Directors of the Mint.
