Background
This medal is a bronze duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Jackie Robinson for his legacy in the advancement of civil rights in the United States. Congress authorized the medal on October 29, 2003. It was presented to Robinson’s widow on March 2, 2005. The Mint issued the bronze medal duplicates in 3.0 inch and 1.5 inch sizes.
Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball when he started playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. In 1962, he was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. He became the first African American to be honored on a U.S. gold commemorative coin in 1997.
